Chapter 2 6

Jenny kept giving me sidelong looks as we walked out of the Medbay back into the corridor. After Doc Williams talk about the Birds, Bees, and Valkyries, with the fact that I was now rather married already. Even if this was the end of the world, there was no need to get too Biblical… those looks were understandable.

I tried not to wince as she held my hand in what I considered almost a death grip. As I moved to head back toward the Game Room, she tugged hard in the other direction.

Mandy Taylor frowned, recording it all. I hoped she’d gotten some good shots back at the Medbay of the Presidential visit.

I glanced down at Jenny and saw Honey looking back at me through her eyes. She glanced at the nearest security camera. I sighed, “Miss President, our tour continues this way.”

Julia helped steer the young Cabinet ministers, who seemed more eager to go in the other direction for some reason.

We followed the corridor around the bend and preceded down what normally was a dead end. Well, Honey, I hope you know what you’re doing...

“Do I smell tea?” the President asked.

I smiled. “This way.”

Mandy Taylor lowered her camera a moment, muttering, “I don’t remember this part of the corridor.”

“Always surprises at every turn around here,” Julia offered.

“Hope there will be some fortune cookies left,” Rachel quipped.

The President frowned.

Jenny swallowed, “Pick me up.”

I looked at her a moment. She had gone pale. I picked her up and she almost fell against my chest.

“Welcome, Lord Commander,” Grandfather Lee said, gesturing us to enter before he sat down behind his low table, a steaming tea pot and cups arrayed before him. His grandson, my brother-in-law, Jimmy, stood near the bank of monitors. Vicky was nowhere in sight. I had no doubt she was close by and watching. That girl likely hadn’t left here since she arrived.

‘She’s family, now,’ I felt Honey share.

“I see you’ve brought guests.”

“At your invitation—or we wouldn’t be here, Dr. Lee.”

Grandfather Lee smiled and said to our guests, “Welcome to the Biologic Observation Station.”

“This is the President, the Attorney General, the members of her Cabinet,” I said, glancing at the boys.

“And Elliot, my security,” the President said.

“The President, are you?” Dr. Lee smiled. “Oh, and, young man, you can put down the gun, seeing as you’re out of bullets.”

Elliot blinked, “I’m not out of bullets.”

Grandfather Lee said, “Feel free to keep holding that rifle as if it’s loaded.”

“Yes, Dr. Lee,” the President said rather defensively. “We are all that remains of the Federal Government.”

“Do I call you Madame President?”

“Miss President will suffice,” she said, stiffly.

“Miss President then, would you care to join me for some tea?”

She glanced at her Attorney General, who frowned.

Evie said, “I’d love some.”

The old man gestured, “Sit, please, sit.”

The President sat next to Evie a moment later.

“Lord Commander?” Grandfather Lee said, going over to his teapot and pouring cups of steeping tea.

“Uh, I’ve my hands full at the moment.”

“I understand,” he said as Jenny hid her face against my shoulder.
